Family Learning - Summer Overview
This half term we have been involved in lots of fun and educational activities, our theme is family wellbeing. As well as receiving a different topic pack each week we also look forward to a treat. Together we are working through our Worry Warrior workbooks, it’s giving us lots of opportunities to communicate as a family, especially as this last year has been so difficult for everyone. We are learning to talk about ourselves and share our feelings. We have also explored Silly Billy and worry dolls, as well as developing our knowledge and awareness of the incredible Maya civilisation through activities and research. We looked at planting, incorporating science, a bottle biosphere, looking at what it means to become a ‘guerrilla gardener’, and a cross curricula look at Jack and the Beanstalk. We have also been finding out about bees and how important they are to our environment and how much we need them in our lives. We have also tried honey and baked some cookies. We have discovered lots of information about bees and their habitats through activities, worksheets, quizzes, crosswords, word scrambles, word searches and much, much more. Our creative group have also been involved in planning, designing and creating a memory box, recycling, upcycling and planting as well as making a wellbeing wheel. There’s lots more interesting and enjoyable topic sessions to follow over the next half term. Keep checking this page for more updates on what we have been up to in our family learning.
Feedback:
We recently asked for some feedback from families on our project. We wanted to know how they felt about the project and how it had supported themselves and families. Here are so of the feedback we received:
- “We love receiving the learning packs. We have fun and learn sop much together.”
- “It’s lovely having the packs delivered to your door with everything in. Then we can do them together when we have time. It’s also nice seeing Denise every week and having a chat.”
- “Great support and no pressure.”
- “A loves doing the activities. We especially liked making the worry dolls, and she takes them to bed every night. We like the Worry Warriors book too, and have talked a lot about feelings, that I don’t think we would have done without it.
- “We look forwards to each Wednesday receiving our pack. We can’t wait to see what’s in the pack, and we love doing them together.”
- “I think that it’s brilliant and brought me and I a lot closer. The weekly packs are enjoyable, and we have fun and learn all at the same time.”
- “Since we have started doing this course, we’ve found it to be brilliant, well organised, great communication, very friendly staff, and the quality, variety and quantity are amazing. The extra curricula work compliments her school learning. We are more aware of how to support her at home. Couldn’t praise this course too much.” She loved the Worry Warrior book and we look at it together most nights, a great conversation starter.”
- It’s been really helpful, lots of new ideas and activities to complete together. The packs are fun and informative, as a parent I am now much more involved in my child’s learning. I understand how she is learning and how I can help.”
- D doesn’t like paperwork or writing and not everything suits him, but he enjoyed making and using the worry dolls. He also decided that the memory box activity will be to make it into a bird box! There is always something in the pack that grabs his interest, and he enjoys doing.
- The planting activity was amazing, all of my three children worked on it together as there was something for all ages. They particularly liked the Jack and the Beanstalk story and the character/puppet activities.”
- “It’s been brilliant, every pack has had lots of new information and ideas. When we completed the planting activity at the weekend it was amazing and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.”
- “The boys are really enjoying the crafts and are very proud of their creations.”
- “We really look forward to seeing what is in the packs and doing them together, we are both learning so many new things.”
- “As a family there’s something for all of us to share and enjoy. It’s giving me more ideas on how to help E and A with their learning, whilst learning new things myself.”
- “I really enjoy these courses as they are showing me how to try new things, giving me ideas and also I feel more confident helping my children.”
- “We love getting the packs and spending family time together working through them.”
- “The worry dolls, books and activities have helped G lots, as she has been bullied. We are finding that using the worry warrior book she is able to tell us what is happening and how we can help her.”
