Blackfell Primary School
P.E
Intent
To ensure the whole school community understands the importance of P.E, sport and mental and physical wellbeing as outlined in the ethos of the school: Be the best you can be, preparing for life long learning, values, ethos and wellbeing and working in partnership.
Based on the Rosenshine Principles by providing instructional support; teaching new material in manageable amounts; good use of modelling; helping pupils when they have made errors and providing for sufficient practice and review we ensure that the children at our school efficiently acquire, rehearse, and connect background knowledge.
P.E at Blackfell Primary school is driven by the 5 key indicators outlined by the DFE:
The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommends that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school.
PE and sport across the school is used as a tool for whole-school improvement.
There is increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
A broad experience of a range of sports and activities are offered to all pupils.
There is regular participation in competitive sport.
Special Educational Needs Disability (SEND) / Pupil Premium / Higher Attainers
All children will have Quality First Teaching. Any children with identified SEND or in receipt of pupil premium funding may have work additional to and different from their peers in order to access the curriculum dependent upon their needs. As well as this, our school offers a demanding and varied curriculum, providing children with a range of opportunities in order for them to reach their full potential and consistently achieve highly from their starting points.
Implementation
We strive to ensure that children have two hours of P.E curriculum hours per week: one hour with a qualified coach and another with the class teacher. Coverage of the curriculum is mapped out across the school for all year groups. We use the ‘Get Set for P.E scheme of work that systematically ensures coverage and progression of skills from Early Years through to Year 6. The scheme includes knowledge organisers, success ladders, videos highlighting skills and lesson plans for all units covered. Children also complete two ‘run a mile’ sessions per week.
Continuous Professional Development - All teachers benefit from working with expert coaches where they observe model lessons and team teach areas they feel that they could be supported with further. In addition, we have schemes of work have been bought and are used regularly to develop lesson sequencing and enhance teaching ideas.
School Competition - Throughout the academic year, children have the opportunity to participate in a diverse array of inter and intra-school sports competitions. Pupils from Years 1-6 actively engage in these events, with a significant number of children in KS2 participating in at least one sport. This involvement not only fosters a love for sports and physical activity but also contributes to the holistic development of the children.
In collaboration with Championship Sports, children have the chance to compete in various sporting activities during breakfast club, lunchtimes, and after-school extracurricular clubs. A highlight of these competitions is the participation of our school football team in the Washington and District Football League. Here, boys and girls from Year 4 to Year 6 have the exciting opportunity to compete in a range of leagues and tournaments against other schools from Washington, showcasing their skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Matches are eagerly anticipated and played with enthusiasm, typically scheduled on Thursday evenings.
Keeping Active throughout the day and after school activities. - At Blackfell we are supporting the PE curriculum’s aim to ensure that more children are active in their lives. We are seeking to ensure that every child can find a physical activity or sport that they are interested in and offering them opportunities to try new sports in the hope that this will encourage them to be active outside of school. Blackfell pupils will have had the opportunity to attend a range of different extra-curricular sports clubs that they may never have previously experienced. These include a wide range of activities from football through to archery and curling. Coaches from Championship Sports have been employed to work with children on a lunchtime and after school, offering activities to support our inter and intra school competition. Both KS1 and KS2 children have the opportunity, at a break and lunchtime, to compete and win points for their school house team. We continually invest in playground equipment to support engagement and activity levels. In addition, the children who attend breakfast club participate in a fun an active session before the start of the school day. The school sports board located in the KS2 hall offers ‘pathways’ for children to be directed to weekend and after school sports club away from school and the website offers links to clubs around Washington.
Be Safe, Be Fit, Be Healthy and Outdoor Learning. – All children across the school work on team building and outdoor learning skills. Working with Forest schools the children complete a day of curriculum time in this area. Our Year 6 children also visit Robins wood. Be Safe, Be Fit, Be Healthy is a dedicated two weeks of work committed to further development of these key areas across the whole school. We participate in a range of different competitions, lessons and events with the aim of promoting and strengthening the importance of health and fitness whilst also reinforcing safety information. For example that fortnight the children will experience varied sports such as archery, golf and surfing; they will compete in sports days; lessons will be built around a healthy lifestyle and staying safe.
Young Leaders Our Year 5 children work towards the ‘Young Leaders Award’ This is a great introduction into leadership for pupils aged nine and over. They utilise their skills to support with break and lunchtime activities.
Impact
Our P.E curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Blackfell Primary school; not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines that PE promotes. Through strong links with PHSE we promote the overall well-being and health of each child through teaching about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. In all classes, children possess a wide range of physical abilities. Whilst recognising this fact, we provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. Children at Blackfell Primary make good progress in PE and are eager to attend after school clubs and competitive sports events.
Pupil Voice
Through discussion and feedback, children talk enthusiastically about their P.E lessons and speak about how they love learning new skills and participating in different sports. Children show confidence and believe they can learn about a new skill and build upon those that they already have.
