Welcome to Reception's Autumn Term 2016

We are Superhero's and Let's Celebrate

Our first week in Reception

What an exciting busy week we have had in our new class. We caught up with all our old friends and made some new ones too! We have enjoyed exploring all the new activities in our indoor and outdoor environment. Take a look at what we've been up to.

We love to read!

Friday is our library day. We visited our school library and got to choose a book we liked and shared it with our friends. We can then take it home and exchange it the following Friday for another one.

Super Heroes come to life!

What a busy fun filled term we have had doing all about Super Heroes. We have made our own Super Heroes out of, dough, paint, and coloured pencils. We enjoyed dressing up and striking a pose as our favourite Super Hero. To make our faces we looked in the mirror to see the colour of our hair and eyes to help us decorate our face to place on a Super Hero body of our choice. Come take a look at our display in the Reception classroom.

All around the classroom.

We have been really busy this week in and around the classroom. We have been talking about who keeps us safe, how to eat a healthy diet and how to keep our bodies fit. We have drawn pictures of people who keep us safe and made models out of reclaimed materials. We enjoyed dressing up in lots of different costumes of people who help keep us safe. When we played outdoors on the balance bikes we put on a helmet to protect our heads from bumps and we made an obstacle course where we had to jump and balance to keep our bodies fit. In the sand we sorted the foods into healthy and unhealthy foods. We got a one minute timer and had to count how many cubes we could get in the bucket before the sand ran out. We have all been very busy with all the different activities. Take a look at what we've been up to.

Fruity Fun with the

Kitchen Disco!

When we went to the library today we each received our booktime book called Kitchen Disco. We had a look at the book and loved the colourful pictures of lovely healthy fruit that come out to play at night. It was really funny and made us giggle.

Diwali

We have been learning all about Diwali. It means 'The Festival of Light.’ It is India’s biggest and most important holiday of the year. They light up clay lamps outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects them from spiritual darkness. The night before they clean and decorate their homes with Rangoli patterns, and wear new clothes to celebrate this festival. They light up fireworks and exchange gifts and sweets. The Indian woman decorate their hands using henna, making a Mehndi pattern. We have been very busy learning all about this festival and its meaning. Take a look at what we’ve been up to.

Santa's Little Helper

We were so excited as we were going to watch the production of 'Santa's Little Helper'. The bus arrived and we all got on and soon arrived at Washington Arts Centre. We were shown to our seats and were greeted by the stars of the show. We had an amazing time singing and joining in. This put us in the Christmas spirit. Thank you once again for a great show.

Munch! Munch! We love lunch!

Every morning in Reception we get to choose what we want to eat from the lunch time menu. We can choose from a hot dinner, vegetarian option and a choice of sandwiches with different fillings. We all line up in the dinner hall and collect our cutlery from the trolley and receive our tray from the dinner ladies with our chosen food. Next we can choose our dessert which there is always a healthy option from yogurts to fresh fruit. We can also visit the salad bar where we can choose from a variety of different salad and fresh baked bread. School lunches are DELICIOUS!

Our 5 R's

As part of our Personal, Social and Emotional Development during circle time we have begun to learn about our 5 R's. This week we were introduced to the monkey. He represents 'R' for risk-taking and trying something new that you haven't tried before or something you were a little unsure of. Each day we all take risks and feel proud when we succeed. We passed the monkey round the circle and in turn we each talked about what was new to them in Reception and how that risk was met. We are looking forward to next time when we will get to meet the elephant.

Autumn leaves are falling...

Now Autumn has arrived we all went out on an Autumn walk around the school grounds to collect some leaves that had fallen from the trees. The leaves were left out to dry overnight and the following day we decorated some strips of card in Autumn colours or red, orange and yellow with all our leaves, sticks, berries and conkers. We then made them into head bands to wear for our Harvest assembly. We all looked great when they were finished and we were all ready to sing our practised song of 'Harvest Moon' to the whole school. What great singers we have in Reception!

Be Safe, Be Fit, Be Healthy Week

Lets get moving

We were all given a pedometer today to count how many steps in one day we could make to help promote 'be fit'. They were placed on 0 and we wore them on the back of our tops all day. After lunch we had P.E and walked all the way down to key stage 2 hall where we made an obstacle course. We had to use our whole bodies in different ways to move on the equipment . We balanced, crawled, slithered and jumped and got to feel our hearts beating fast. At the end of the day our pedometers were checked and recorded ready to hand to the next class. Well done Reception!

 Lets Cook!

We have been talking all week about what keeps us healthy. A lady came in on Friday to teach us all about good and bad foods. We learnt that lots of food have hidden sugar, fat and salt in them. We tasted some cereal and popcorn and helped to make a delicious fruit smoothie. we used a banana, blueberries, blackberries, some orange and apple juice. We all had a taste and thought it was really yummy!

Children in Need 2016

We have been supporting ‘Children in Need’ by coming into school with Pudsey Bear accessories. We made some Pudsey Bear headbands and decorated some cakes to sell on our cake stall all to raise money for Children in need. We brought in some money to buy cakes and we all got to eat them they were delicious!

Our very first P.E lesson.

We all enjoyed our very first p.e lesson. We found a space in the classroom to get changed into our p.e kit. When  we were ready we walked to the big school hall. We listened to instructions on what we had to do. First we warmed up our bodies by walking quickly round the hall being careful not to bump into our friends. Next we played a game called 'stuck in the mud' it was so much fun. 5 children were mud catchers, we all ran around and they had to catch us if you got caught you were stuck in the mud and weren't allowed to move. We finished our game and had cool down. All that exercise made us thirsty so we all went back to class and enjoyed a cup of cold water.

Our first visit to the computer suite

What a super time Reception had in our computer suite this morning. We began by talking about some of the rules when using the computers and the computer suite.  We learnt about the different parts of the computer and how to switch our computers on. Then using interactive programs called, 'Dress the teddy' and an Espresso Phonics Game we used the programs to help us develop and practise our mouse skills by clicking and dragging using the mouse.  We all designed our own teddy and were so pleased with our computing skills.

Hula Hooping!

The lady from Hoopstarz came to school to show us how to use the hula hoop. We learned how to stand correctly and move our bodies back and forth so the hoop stayed up. It was really tricky at first but with a little practise we got the hang of it .We learned some new tricks and played a game called spaceships and angels where when the music played we moved around the hall in our hoop pretending it was a spaceship, but when the music stopped we stopped and held the hoop high above our heads like an angels halo. When we finished the lady said we were great! Hula hooping is so much fun and a great way to keep our bodies fit and active.

Feeling Happy

In circle time we talked about feelings and what makes us happy. we passed the happy feelings stone around the circle and in turn we each said what makes us happy.

Anti-bullying week

We have been really busy this week raising awareness of Anti-bullying. We have made friendship bracelets, made our friends out of lots of different creative materials and we all enjoyed making a friendship web in small group time and sharing our happy thoughts about our friends.
