Welcome to Year 1's Summer Term

Pyjama Drama

Just before we broke up for Spring break we enjoyed a drama session with Lucy from Pyjama Drama. It was a great introduction to our fairytale unit. Children enjoyed creating their own fantastic versions of Jack and the Bean Stalk. Well done year 1, fantastic stories!

The Three Little Pigs

During Literacy we learnt the story of The Three Little Pigs. We had great fun making our own version of the house using the materials and as a class acted out the story. Great team work Year 1!

Buddhism Objects

To start our week off we had a visit from The Oriental Museum in Durham. They brought lots of Buddhist objects for us to handle and look at. We learnt about meditation symbols, the clothes monks wear and how they wash their Buddhas. We paticulalry liked the spinning prayer wheel which, when spun, release different prayers.

Sewing Thai Elephants

We have practise our sewing skills and made some fantastic Thai elephant cushions. We were all very patient and took our time with the stitch work. They all look fantastic!

Washington Wetlands

We had a fantastic day at Washington Wetlands! To begin the day we accessed the new play area and had great fun in the splash zone. We then had a walk around and learnt about some of the animals there. The chicks were very cute. In the afternoon we had a go at pond dipping. We found a huge pond snail! After we went to the hide and watched some birds.

Capacity

In Maths we have been learning about capacity. We used water to measure cup fulls and compare the capacity of different containers. We then moved on to working with litres later in the week.

Minibeast Models

We have carefully planned and created our own minibeast models using junk items. We were all very patient when working on our models and the outcome was wonderful. We hope you like them as much as all the children and staff did at school.

Plant Detectives

To introduce our new science topic we became plant detectives around our school. We found lots of plants including trees, daffodils and daisies. We now have lots of questions to ask!

E-Safety

We have done lots of working about keeping safe on the internet. Smartie the penguin was given a new laptop for his birthday. He had some problems when playing games. We helped him to make the right choices. We have learnt to never give our personal details out to strangers and if we are unsure we always ask a grown up. We talked about what kind of websites are safe and what we do if pop ups come up on our screen.

Multi-Cultural Week

Buddhist Prayer Flags and Embossing

After handling objects Ross and Dan from the Museum talked to us about Prayer flags. We chose someone who is special to us and made our own prayer flags for them. It is said that the wind will carry our prayers. We also tried our hand at embossing different kinds of Buddhas on to metal using special tools.

Thai Cooking

We were joined by Nik the chef in Year 1 and 2 to help us cook up some Thai delights. We made a lovely Thai noodle dish and some crackers. We helped to cut the asparagus, carrotts, and spring onions along with grating the butter nut squash. Nik prepared the chicken and used cocnut milk and peanut butter to create a delicious sauce. We all tried the noodle dish and gave it a big thumbs up.

Sports Day

We had a great sports day. All of the children enjoyed competing in their teams. Thank you for coming to support us!

Minibeast Hunt

Our science investigation was great fun! We chose four different habitats around school to invesitgate. We looked for different kinds of insects. We found lots of woodlouse in the bark area.

School Picnic

We all had a wonderful at the school picnic and we hope you did too! We were singing superstards when performing "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles. We enjoyed ice cream and some games set up by Year 6. It was lovely to see so many of you there having fun.

Pets at Home Visit Us

We had a visit from Pets at Home on our first week back to complete our animal topic in Science. We discussed why these animals make good pets and how to be a responsible pet owner. We were very careful when handling the animals and enjoyed stroking them.

Blackfell Explorers

We have produced some great information leaflets all about Blackfell. We went for a walk around the area and asked lots of questions to the people who worked there. We now know how much fish and chips are from The Blackfell Fryer and what time The Premier shop is open. If ever you should get lost in Blackfell or need some help, Year 1 will be sure to help you!

Karate

Yoi! This means get ready when carrying out karate. We concentrated very hard to follow our karate instructor John. He showed us how to punch, kick and block. We were very good at "kiai" which is the loud screams heard during karate!

Buddha Art

We know lots about Buddha and why he looks the way he does. Did you know the bumps on his head are snail shells from when he meditated for 70 days? The snails protected his head from the sun. We created our own Buddhas carefully drawing the shapes of his face with metalic crayons on tea stained paper. We then re-created the snail shells using a selection of cereals to give a 3D effect.

Where The Wild Things Are

Year 1 have been acting out the story Where the Wild Things Are. Some of us were very wild indeed! We remembered the order of the story and then used comic life to create our own comic strips of the story.

Our vegetable Patch

What a fantastic treat we have had on the final week of term! At last some of our fresh vegetables were ready to be picked and eaten. The lettuce was crunchy and the radishes yummy. Well done to the children for taking such great care of the patch and a special thank you to our school governor Mrs. Pitcairn for helping us.
