Year 2 Spring 2023-24
Literacy: The Penguin Who Wanted to Find Out
In Literacy, we are reading a book called The Penguin Who Wanted to Find out by Jill Tomlinson. To start off our unit we made inferences from the front cover and the blurb, we were able to work out the main characters name and where he lived. We then asked some questions that he might like to find out, we did this by working in groups. We discussed different sentence types and how best to punctuate these.
P.E- Gymnastics, balances
In P.E this term, we are completing a unit on gymnastics. This week we used shapes such as pikes, straddles, front supports and back supports. We chose 4 of our shapes and put them in to a short routine to perform to the class. We focused on tension, pointed toes and fingers.
Geography- Atlas Work
In Geography, we have been learning about the 7 continents and 5 oceans of the world. We have been using Atlases to help us locate them.
Maths- Comparing measurements
In Maths, we have been learning about measurements, in particular centimetres and metres. Today we were tasked with comparing items in the classroom, finding those which were longer and shorter than a metre.
PSHE- Keeping our teeth healthy
In our PSHE session this week, we set up an experiment with egg shells. We discussed how egg shells are similar to our teeth, in each glass with an egg shell we placed one with a fizzy drink, one with a juice and another with water. We talked about what we think might happen to the eggs shells over the coming days and how this relates to our teeth. After a few days, we looked back at the egg shells, we found that the one in the sugary drink, coke, had changed colour and did not feel as hard as it used too. We saw the shell in water was in the best condition and had not changed at all. We talked about the best options for drinks and foods for our teeth and spoke about good dental hygiene.
Art- Antony Gormley Sculptures
This term we will be looking at the work of the famous sculptors. In todays lesson we looked at the work of Antony Gormley. We learnt that he makes sculptures in the shape of human form using simple wooden and metal shapes. In our first lesson we used flat shapes called Tans. We arranged them to create our own individual representation of the human form.
As a class we discussed some of Antony Gormley's sculptures and decided if we liked them, how they made us feel, what materials we thought he used, what they reminded us of and did we know the names of any of them. Well done Year 2!
Art- Using clay
In art we used clay to create our statues in the style of Henry Moore. We worked really hard to manipulate the clay and attach each body part in the correct position. Well done year 2!
Safer Internet Day: Inspiring change? Making a difference, managing influence and navigating change online
For internet safety day we begun by thinking about what technology looked like and how it is always changing. We were asked to order computer, phones, musical devices and games form oldest to newest. We then spoke about smaller changes we may see online day to day, from a change in character avatars or even pop ups. We then shared a story that explored how changes online can make us feel. In this story, we meet Mo and Jaz, two children who love playing games online. When something happens in their game that makes them feel worried, they realise they need to let an adult know. We spoke about our trusted adults and what do do if a change makes us feel unsafe.
Maths- Measuring weight
In Maths, we have moved on to learning about how to measure mass. We first learnt about different scales, and in this lesson we used balancing scales and cubes to find out which items were heavier and lighter.
Music- The Ocarina
In Year 2, children have had their first lesson learning about the ocarina. Today, they labelled the parts of a ocarina and have begun to learn how to play some basic notes. By the end of the unit, they will know how to play London's burning.
P.E travelling and balancing using apparatus
In this lesson, we discussed different movements and went through the safety elements. We all enjoyed taking some new risks and experiments with the gymnastic equipment. We travelled in different ways including over, under, through and down. We also completed some balances on the equipment.
History- Each one, teach one
Today in History, we found out about Neil Armstrong. To learn new facts we were tasked with having one task each and then sharing it with as many others as we could! We were then challenged to create a fact file about him with the facts we had learnt.
World Book Day
We had a wonderful World Book Day. We enjoyed dressing up and carried out activities linked to our current text, The Lighthouse Keepers lunch. We also took part in World Book day tasks like designing a book voucher and guessing staff auto biographies as well las making our own!
