Drawing and Making 2D Shapes

Year 2 had lots of fun in maths today! First we went outside to draw simple 2D shapes on the yard such as circles, triangles, squares and rectangles. After we were confident drawing these shapes, we returned to the classroom to make larger 2D shapes with art straws such as pentagons, hexagons, heptagons and octagons. Some of us made regular 2D shapes and some of us made irregular 2D shapes and we discussed the difference.

Science Week

For Science Week we spent some time learning about the famous scientist Joseph Banks and the impact he had during his lifetime. As a class we identified the key events in his life and created a timeline to represent this. Then we then looked at designing our own vegetable garden! First we looked at different fruits and vegetables to consider where they grew before  working in groups to plan out our gardens. Once we were happy with our 2D plan, we began creating our final 3D version where we used a range of materials and resources to resemble the elements of the gardens.

World Water Day

To get us thinking about how we use water in our everyday lives we made a mind map in groups of all the different ways we might use water such as drinking, washing up, watering plants or having a bath. We then listened to a story called ‘The Water Princess’ by Susan Verde and made comparisons about how easily we can access water compared with the character Gie Gie in the story. This helped us realise that we should value water more.  Finally we thought about how we can save water opposed to wasting it.
