Welcome to Year 5 Spring Term 24-25
Health and Well-being. Yoga in Year 5
In PSHE this week we have been talking about things that cause us stress or worry. Looking after our mental health and well-being is very important and we talked about some of the different ways we can deal with stress and worry. We tried some yoga and used Cosmic Kids Yoga to show us some of the moves we can use.
Children's Mental Health Week
For Children's Mental Health Week, Year 5 enjoyed creating their own 'Islands of Personality' to represent what is important to them and what makes them unique. We also explored how changes within these areas can impact our emotions. As a bit of fun at the end of our lesson, we played a game of bingo to explore the ways our personalities and emotions varied between one another and to celebrate our individuality.
World Book Day
Year 5 have had a brilliant day for World Book Day. We all looked fabulous in our costumes and we enjoyed the parade in the hall. During the morning, we took part in an online quiz with the National Literacy Trust and the Premier League Primary Stars. Authors and even some premier league and WSL players asked questions about books and football. We scored 10/10 in each round! One of the themes of the day was to enjoy reading in the outdoors. We gathered up our favourite books and sat outside in the sunshine and read together. Hopefully we can do this again sometime. At the end of the day we learned about an author/illustrator called Rob Biddulph. He showed us how to draw one of the characters from his books (Gregosaurus) and we followed his tutorial to create our own dinosaur character.
P.E. Archery
In our P.E. lesson this week, we have enjoyed archery. We had to use our coordination to hit the target.
Safer Internet Day
The theme for Safer Internet Day 2025 is 'Too good to be true protecting yourself and others from scams online'. In Year 5 we started the day by watching a live lesson by BBC Bitesize. We learned how to spot a scam and about phishing. Using the word 'scammed' we were shown what to look out for:
Sounds too good to be true.
Contact you weren't expecting.
Asks for personal information.
Money or trade request.
Mistakes in spelling or grammar.
Extra urgency.
Dodgy source.
After watching the lesson, we designed a poster of top tips to avoid being scammed.
In the afternoon, we learned about fake news, generative AI and how to spot 'fakes'. We discussed some scenarios and what we would do before creating our own 'mock scam'.
Year 5 and 6 visit to Safety Works!
Year 5 and 6 had a wonderful morning at Safetyworks! We learned about so many aspects of safety with many different people: water safety, antisocial behaviour and peer pressure, the police, fire safety, road safety and metro safety. We learned so much information to take home and share with our families.

Chinese New Year
In Year 5 we celebrated Chinese New Year. After an assembly on the traditions of Chinese New Year, we became artists and completed some Chinese paintings. We then really enjoyed preparing, making and tasting some vegetable spring rolls! They were delicious.
Year 5 Cityscapes
In art this half term we have been looking at Cityscapes. We enjoyed sharing our thoughts on the work by Charles Fazzino who is an American artist known for his 3D silkscreen prints. We also looked at some photography of cityscapes and discussed how the photographer had captured the same image at different times of the day and how the position of the light created silhouettes. Using crayons, pencils and pens, we created our own backgrounds and used black paper to make a silhouette.
British Science Week
This year's British Science Week theme is 'Change and Adaptation'. In Year 5 we looked at how different animals are adapted to their habitats and learned about the work of Charles Darwin. We matched different animals to their adaptations then chose an animal of our own and carried out some research to find out how it is adapted to it's environment.
