Hockey skills

On Wednesdays, in our P.E. lessons we are learning hockey skills. So far, we have learned how to hold the stick properly with the correct grip and to dribble, stop and pass the ball.

Separating Materials

In science, we have been looking at different ways to separate materials. A mixture of flour and raisins was separated using a sieve. The flour passed through the holes in the sieve and the raisins were left behind. To separate a mixture of rice and metal pins, we used magnets. The pins stuck to the magnet and the rice was left in the tray.

World Book Day

We've had a brilliant time celebrating World Book Day. To start the day we joined 100s of schools from across the country to take part in the 'World Book Day Footy and Booky Quiz'. There were 20 football and book related questions to answer. We saw some famous faces from the Premier League, EFL and even a couple of Lionesses. It was fun, interactive and we really enjoyed it. This afternoon, we went to the hall and read some autobiographies that school staff had written. They were anonymous so we had to work out who had written each one from the facts they gave us. We all guessed Mrs Taylor correctly! We came back to class, wrote our own and tried to work out who each one belonged to.

Everyone looked fabulous in their costumes and book inspired clothes. What a great day.

Dissolving Materials

In science this half term we are learning about materials and their properties. This week, we have been observing what happens when materials are dissolved in water. Sugar, salt, flour, soil and coffee were all mixed with water to see if they dissolved. We learned that soluble materials dissolve in water and insoluble materials don't. We are now evaporating the water to see if we can get the dissolved materials back.

Year 5 Safer Internet Day

In year 5, we started by looking at our digital footprints. A digital footprint is a trail of information left behind when using apps or websites. We made a list of all the website and apps we had used over the past week- there were lots! Then we thought about how create a positive digital footprint.

Next we talked about how technology has changed over the years and how this has impacted on our daily lives including education. We also learned about something called 'persuasive design' which is a practise that companies use to influence us when we are online e.g. pop ups, time limited discount and auto play. We worked together to match the feature with its definition and influence before discussing ways to stop these techniques negatively affecting us.

Well-being Wednesday

On Wednesday, we had a brilliant day thinking about about our mental health and well-being. During the day, we completed lots of activities that helped us to smile and relax. These included: colouring, dancing and even listening to and playing some music. Dancing with Gemma was such good fun and made us all feel really happy and full of energy.

PSHE Health and Well-Being

In our PSHE lessons, we have been learning about health and well-being. We have spent time discussing why it is important to keep our bodies and minds healthy and ways in which we can do this. Last lesson, we learned why getting a good nights sleep is important and what happens to our bodies while we are sleeping. This week, we thought about different ways to relax and tried some yoga. We thought about how it made us feel and the benefits of exercise and meditation.

Year 5 Literacy

This week in year 5 we have been using an animation to inspire our writing. Today we focussed on the contrasting views of the character and designed posters portraying his different traits. The children thought carefully about the words, colours and images they used to reflect the differences in his personality.

British Science Week In Year 5

This week it's British Science Week and this year the theme is 'Time'. In year 5 we have thought about the concept of time and, although it is difficult to define, it is all around us. We linked this to our work earlier in the year on Earth and Space and talked about where different times come from e.g. 24 hours in a day, 365 days in a year. During the lesson, we discussed different jobs related to science and the children found it interesting that, other than becoming a scientist there, are lots of other careers that use science e.g. nurse, astronomer, vet. However the best part of the day was making water clocks. The children used old pop bottles and poured water through a hole in the top. Using a black pen, they marked one minute intervals at the level of water up to 10 minutes. Now that the bottles are empty they can be filled with water again and the intervals used to measure the time.
