Welcome to Year 6 Summer Term 24-25

Rounders

This week we began our new PE unit of rounders. We begun by practising our accuracy with overarm and underarm throws and running to collect a ball before throwing it. We learned how to stump someone out and the importance of throwing accurately to each other to ensure the catcher could stump someone out. We ended with a mini game of tennis rounders.

Fencing

As part of our Sports week, Year 6 had a session of fencing. We practised how to salute, be ready and practised our fencing techniques. We played mini tournaments in groups with our friends acting as referees. It was a lot of fun.

Colour Run

Year 6 have been brilliant this morning organising and running our whole school Colour Run Event. They helped set up, made posters, cheered everyone on, gave out ice pops and medals and threw paint at the runners.

At the end they got to have a turn too. It was a great morning and we raised lots of money to put towards our Leavers Visit to Lilidorei and Alnwick Garden tomorrow.

Thank you to everyone for taking part.

Gibside

Year 6 had an amazing time at Gibside National Trust, thanks to the funds raised during the Welly Walk. It was a great day exploring, playing, walking, den building and having fun in the park! Our last class visit in Year 6!

Investigating Climate Change with Northern Gas Networks

Year 6 had a fantastic time working with Northern Gas Networks to explore important topics such as energy, net zero, the greenhouse effect and climate change. The workshop was interactive and thought-provoking, helping us understand the science behind climate change and the steps we can take towards a more sustainable future.

Using what we had learned, we then designed our own Net Zero islands, applying our knowledge creatively to imagine sustainable communities of the future.

This exciting visit linked perfectly with our Geography unit on climate and sustainability.

Sugar, Muscles and Moving More

As part of our Health and Fitness Week, we took part in an interesting session led by Anthony Green from the Health and Fitness Team. We looked at how much sugar is hidden in some of the foods we eat and saw the difference between a pound of muscle and a pound of fat. We also explored what happens to our arteries when they become blocked. It really made us think about how important regular physical exercise is for staying healthy.

Lilidorei

Year 6 had an amazing time visiting Lilidorei in Alnwick as their leaver's trip. They had fun exploring the play structure, enjoying an ice cream, listening to and taking part in story time and looking around the clan houses. The sun was shining too!

Sports Day

Year 6 enjoyed their final Sports Day at Blackfell Primary, taking part in a range of events including the egg and spoon race, standing long jump, skipping race, vortex throw, football dribble and sprint race. A big well done to Oak and Willow, this year’s winning teams.

Using Microsoft Word

Our new Computing unit is learning about word processing on the Microsoft Office programs. We started this week learning about how Microsoft Word works and how its benefits over other programs. We created Word documents about ourselves to send to our respective secondary schools.

School Disco

What a fab time Year 6 had at the Summer Disco organised by the school council. It was lovely to see them dressed up and enjoying themselves for their last Disco at Blackfell.

Beamish - Coal Mining

Year 6 had a fantastic time visiting Beamish Museum as part of their learning about coal mining. The highlight was the Little Sparks workshop where they learned about the dangers of gas explosions in mines through exciting demonstrations that really brought history to life. The children also explored the 1950s area, enjoyed their lunch in the sun, had a play in the park and treated themselves to an ice cream. They spent time exploring the 1900s town, stepping back in time to see how people lived and worked. It was a great trip with wonderful weather and lots of memories made.

Alnwick Garden

To finish off our leaver's visit, we spent the afternoon at Alnwick Garden. It was so much fun exploring the maze, smelling the roses in the ornamental garden, swinging amongst the trees in the cherry orchard and cooling down by splashing in the fountains! What a wonderful day out we had.
