Year 6 Summer 2023-24

Newcastle University - Think like a Scientist

The Newcastle University Street Science team visited today and delivered a workshop on 'Thinking like a Scientist'. We discussed what a scientist was and the many jobs that involve Science. Then we learned about how to be a good scientist and how it involves a lot of predicting, testing and drawing conclusions. As part of our session we investigated our 5 senses with different activities which were great fun before being told that we actually have 9 senses and tested out our four lesser-known senses.

Athletics

Year 6 have been practising their athletics skills in preparation for Sports Day. Over the last few weeks we have been practising our sprinting skills and distance running and learning about conserving some of our energy; our jumping skills and the best techniques to jump furthest and our throwing skills and finding the power through our arm and shoulder to propel the vortex as far as possible! Year 6 have shown excellent reflection and resilience!

Alnwick Garden

Year 6 followed on their morning at Lilidorei with an afternoon in Alnwick Garden. We had tours of the Poison Garden, explored the orchard and swings, wandered the ornamental garden, got lost in the maze and splashed in the water at the water features. It was a great day out!

Washington's 60th Birthday

For our Washington's 60th Birthday Family event, Year 6 designed some fundraising activities. Tasked with making their money grow, they had to plan what they would do, what they would need to spend, how they would make money and share out responsibilities. On the day they were absolutely fabulous at running their events and raising lots of money! Well done Year 6!

P.E Team Building Skills

In today's PE session, Year 6 focused on developing team-building skills. We discussed key aspects of effective teamwork such as communication, effort, and cooperation. To put these concepts into practice, the children participated in various games designed to enhance trust and communication.

Lilidorei

Year 6 had an amazing time on their class visit to Lilidorei and the Alnwick Garden. First we explored Lilidorei and enjoyed the playscape (the biggest in the world) before enjoying story time, ice cream and completing a quest by exploring the clan houses.

World Music Day

Year 6 celebrated World Music Day by listening to music from one of our sweepstake countries from the Euros - Germany. We listened to Barbara Rharbarberbar which has become a viral song online. WE all enjoyed the beat and the tempo of the song and practised dancing to it too!

Sports Day

Key Stage 2 enjoyed a mini Sports Day on the yard. We competed in vortex throw, egg and spoon, long jump and skipping. It was fun celebrating our last Sports Day together.

Team Work

Year 6 finished the week with some team work skills: the children really enjoyed their game of football rounders.

Good luck with your SATS next week.  You have worked so hard and will be great!

More Lilidorei!

Year 6 had an amazing time on their class visit to Lilidorei and the Alnwick Garden. First we explored Lilidorei and enjoyed the playscape (the biggest in the world) before enjoying story time, ice cream and completing a quest by exploring the clan houses.

Sports Week

During Sports Week, Year 6 enjoyed trying out some new sports. First we had a go at Jiu Jitsu. The coach showed us some skills which we practised together, then we practised some holds and defensive moves in pairs before we challenged each other. Miss Kitchen was very impressed with our moves! Next we tried fencing. We learned how to move, signals and we practised against each other. It was great fun!

DT - Textiles

As part of our Design and Technology  curriculum, Year 6 pupils were tasked with designing and creating their own waistcoats for a teddy bear. They researched different designers, practised stitching techniques, designed their own waistcoat, measured and created templates and then stitched the pieces together. They finished their products by adding fastenings and embellishments to make their waistcoats more appealing.  We were really pleased with our finished products!
