Year 6 Spring 2023-24
Visit to Nissan
Year 6 had a brilliant time at Nissan. We learned about the history of Nissan, their production and production lines and then we had a go at building some cars using Lego and introduced our own production lines. We learned how to make our production lines more efficient and timed ourselves for improvement.
In the afternoon we had the chance to see some of the Nissan robots in action and practised our reflex skills. To take home, we were given some goody bags too!
Greek Vases
We used plasticine to practise and refine our techniques for creating our Greek vases. We carefully used a range of tools to build a plasticine pot which included plaits, coils, swirls and patterned design. We will start to create our clay vases next lesson.
Making Our Greek Vases
We've really enjoyed our art topic this term: we explored Ancient Greek pottery and then designed our own using their style. However, our pottery was inspired by modern-day themes such as emojis. We used clay coils to build our vases piece by piece and then painted them once dry. We were really pleased with the finished products.
Wellbeing Wednesday
Year 6 had a fantastic day yesterday celebrating Wellbeing Wednesday as organised by the school council. We talked about how music can be relaxing and help lift your mood and created some of our own music on the ukuleles; we continued this theme by listening to some dance music with Mrs Newton and having a good boogie with our friends and finally we enjoyed some quiet mindfulness colouring having some time to talk to our friends and listen to relaxing music. We all agreed what a wonderful day we had had and how music, dance and time with our friends can really lift our mood and brighten our day.
Hinduism
Year 6 started their R.E. topic by exploring the deities of Hinduism. They read the story of Kannappar the Hunter to understand the symbolism of Shivalingas. Afterwards, they engaged in discussions, comparing Hindu beliefs with their own.
Safer Internet Day
For Safer Internet Day, we looked at 'Persuasive design’ which is a design practice that companies use to change and influence users’ thoughts and behaviours. These techniques are frequently implemented on the internet. We learned that apps and games are designed to persuade people to give up their time and money. The techniques they use are sometimes called ‘persuasive design techniques’. We discussed what we can do to stop some of these persuasive techniques from negatively affecting us and our screen time.
World Book Day
World Book Day was a great success for Year 6. The children arrived at school dressed as characters or themes from their favourite books. Throughout the day, they participated in various activities such as matching stories to a picture, sharing their reading preferences through an autobiographical task, guessing the favourite books of staff members and designing a World Book Day token. To cap it all off, a World Book Day interactive quiz provided a fun and engaging end to an enjoyable day.
Designing a Community
Working with the Ministry of Building Innovation and Education, Year 6 worked on a Design Technology project this term, with the goal of designing a residential community. Initially, they discussed what a home signifies to each of them. Following this, they researched various types of housing suitable for different demographics such as young families and the elderly. With a set of specifications, they proceeded to design their village, carefully considering aspects such as material choices, renewable energy sources, site layout and developing a sense of community. The project culminated with teams constructing pop-up models of their designs and presenting their work to the rest of the class.
Volleyball
In PE we have been learning to play Volleyball. We have begun by learning the ready position, how to fast catch volley and practised keeping a rally going to ensure control with the ball. Next we will learn how to set a ball for our teammate to volley.
Shadows
In Science, Year 6 have been learning about light. We have studied reflection, refraction and learned about the visible spectrum. This week we experimented with shadows and making shadow puppets. We learned that shadows are created because light can only travel in straight lines therefore the shadow will always be the same shape as the object blocking it. We made our shadows bigger and smaller by moving the light source.
British Science Week 2024
With this year's theme being Time, Year 6 made some water clocks for British Science Week. We followed the instructions and observed the water as it dropped through creating our own time measurements. Following this, we looked at careers in Science and guessed the careers from the photos. We thought about what Science career we would be interested in and how this linked to our Science lessons.
