Year 6 Autumn 2022-23

Team Games

To start our year in Year 6 we discussed what would make us a strong team. We discussed how to work well together and then had to use our new skills to complete a series of team challenges. We discovered communication and everybody taking on a role were the key to success.

Receiving our Roles

Following our interviews with Mrs Watkins, we were presented with our roles and our badges. The roles include the following: Grounds Maintenance, Playtime Paramedic, Brilliant Buddies, Register Monitors, ICT Technicians and Reading Warriors. We devised a rota and began our new jobs.

The Battle of Britain

We used our communication and research skills  to find out about the Battle of Britain.  After finding key information, we then spent time teaching other children in the class what we knew.

Electricity - Making our own quiz boards!

As part of our Science unit, we put into practise our skills of making circuits and designed our  own working quiz board. We decided on a theme, made some questions and answers and used wire strippers to strip the wires and attach them to the back of our boards. If the correct answer and question were matched, the bulb would light up or the motor would spin. We really enjoyed this lesson.

Gymnastic inversions

In our next Gymnastics lesson we learned about inversions - where our hips are above our shoulders. With our partner to help us, we had a try a at shoulder stands, bridges and handstands. We practised pointing our toes and straightening our legs so that our holds were neat. After this we created a short routine with the balances, rolls and inversions we had learned over the last few weeks. Well done Year 6.

Christmas Carols

Year 6 performed brilliantly at their Christmas Carol Concert with Year 5. We shared the story of Jesus' birth and sang some traditional Christmas carols. We also talked about how Christmas is celebrated in different ways and sang some more modern Christmas songs. We hope we spread some festive cheer with our parents/carers. Merry Christmas!

Our new jobs!

As the eldest class in school, we have had the opportunity to apply for responsibilities in school. After a chat with Mrs Watkins, we had a think about which jobs we would be interested in and the skills and experience we could bring to the jobs. We wrote letters of application for Mrs Watkins and prepared for our interviews!

Chase the Pizza!

Year 6 took part in a Coding Workshop hosted by Coram. The theme was to make a game called Chase the Pizza. We had to design our own character, choose our background and insert the correct coding so that our pizza moved to a new position when caught. We also learned how to add timers and a scoreboard. The games we produced were excellent!

P.E - Football Skills

Year 6 have really enjoyed practising a range of football skills.  They have worked on dribbling, passing and shooting and applied these skills within a range of games.  We have really improved on our skills.

Black History Month

The focus for Black History Month UK 2022 is, ‘Time for Change: Action not Words’.

Year 6 investigated Martin Luther King who was a civil rights activist in the 1950s and 1960s. He led non-violent protests to fight for the rights of all people including African Americans. He hoped that America and the world could work together to ensure that race would not impact a person's civil rights.

After careful research, which involved improving our note-making skills, we created a fact file about his life.  We were amazed at the impact he had on so many lives.

Internet Legends

This term in Computing we have been learning about online safety. We have followed the Google Internet Legends and learned how to be Internet Secure, Internet Kind, Internet Brave, Internet Alert and Internet Sharp. After our lessons, we have completed Google Interland and been tested on the 5 elements of our learning. Now this is complete we are INTERNET LEGENDS!

Snowtubing

Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed snowtubing!  On Wednesday 7th December, we tested the slopes on our rubber rings at Silksworth.  Afterwards, we had a surprise encounter with Santa and warmed up with a delicious hot chocolate.  What a fantastic afternoon!

DT - Fairground Rides

For our CDT this term, Year 6 designed and made their own fairground ride.  Using their learning from Science, they were able to add a motor to their structure allowing their model to move or rotate.

Electricity - making circuits!

Our new Science topic is Electricity. For our first lesson we discussed electrical safety in the home and wrote some top tips. After that we practised making electrical circuits. We tried different components like buzzers, bulbs and motors. Our favourite was the motor as we loved watching it spin.

Exploring Censorship

This term, Year 6 are investigating how close Britain came to losing World War Two.  They have explored the causes of the war, the retreat from Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain, Blitz and life on the home front.  Here they are studying a range of sources and deciding whether the government would have censored the image or nor in order to lift morale.

They have used their knowledge of the war to help within their writing creating a piece of historical fiction based on the story ‘Friend or Foe’ and basing their biographical writing around the life of Anne Frank.

Sunderland AFC Flag Bearers

On Saturday 15th October, Blackfell were chosen as 'School of the Game' for Sunderland AFC against Wigan.  Some of the children were flag bearers as the players arrived on the pitch to start the match. It was a fantastic day of practising on the pitch, playing football at the Beacon of Light, welcoming the players to 38,000 fans and then watching a 2-1 victory in the 'comfortable seats.'  A big thank you to AK Teaching and Sunderland AFC for inviting us to join in this wonderful experience that the children will never forget.

Counter Balance and Counter Tension

In our first gymnastics lesson we learned how to complete a variety of rolls. We learned the teddy bear roll, forward roll and backwards roll. In our next lesson we focussed on partner balances. We learned about counter balance where we share out our body weight to balance and counter tension where we pull against each other to hold a balance. We discussed the importance of having tense muscles.

Anti-bullying week 2022

To begin our celebration of Anti-Bullying Week in school, we had an odd socks day where we wore different socks to appreciate how it is ok to be different and we should celebrate our differences. This year's theme was Reach Out and we learned about the different roles of bullying, challenging each person involved not just the ringleader and thought of 5 different ways to reach out.

Extreme Earth

Our Geography topic this term is extreme earth.  We used atlases and chrome books to gain a better understanding of location in relation to climate.  We found the equator and tropics. Using our research skills we were able to locate the hottest, coldest, wettest and driest places on our amazing planet.
