Welcome to Year 6's Autumn Term 2016
New Beginnings
What a great start to Year 6 we've had! It's been lovely to see the children returning to school with so much enthusiasm and ready to be role models for the rest of the school. We've had some fun building up our teamwork skills in P.E. and have kicked off our topic with some Children of WW2 portraits.
Nissan
On Friday 30th September, Year 6 visited Nissan. We all had a fantastic day learning about the brand and how car manufacturing works. We tested ourselves putting together parts and building a Lego car as a team using a production line and had a go at some of the skills Nissan employees have to master to get a job there. Now nearly all of us want to work at Nissan!
Incredible Eden Camp
As part of our World War 2 topic, Year 6 went on a class visit to Eden Camp. We had an amazing day learning about lots of things war-related: Hitler's rise to power, the effect on Britain, the Blitz and evacuation as well as many others. It was interesting to see how Eden Camp was used for Prisoners during WW2. We were able to go in shelters, see WW2 vehicles and watch a really funny puppet show. Overall we had a brilliant day!
World War 2 Boot camp!
Year 6 had a brilliant (but exhausting) morning when we took part in a Army-style boot camp session. After our initial fitness tests (press ups and burpees) and warm up, we had a go at the assault course. It was fun crawling through the tunnels, dodging the land mines and scrambling under the net. We finished with the tug of war to test our strength. Everyone was brilliant. Well done Year 6!
Testing, Testing!
Since we have been learning about electricity in Science, we put our skills to the test. Using our learning about the different food groups, we created an electronic quiz board to test others on their knowledge. We connected wires behind the board and used a buzzer or a light bulb in our circuit. If the correct question and answer were matched up, the buzzer or bulb would work. They were very impressive!
World War 2 Vehicles
One sunny Friday morning, we had a surprise at school. Mr Carr had kindly arranged for some visitors to come in to talk to us about World War 2 and their experiences and bring along some memorabilia for us to look at. It was really interesting listening to some first hand accounts and seeing Mr Carr's collection of vehicles. Mrs Watkins and Miss Kitchen even had chance to drive the cars! Thank you again to all those who came in and a special thanks to Mr Carr for arranging it all.
Futsal Tournament
Well done to the Year 6 boys who participated in a futsal tournament at Oxclose Academy. We played against Oxclose, Lambton and George Washington and ended up winning the tournament thanks to lots of magnificent goals. A great afternoon!
Fabulous First Aiders
Year 6 had a fantastic day being trained in first aid by St John Ambulance. After being trained in spotting dangers, we learned how to put people into the recovery position; give CPR; stop people choking; how to treat burns, nosebleeds and sprains and were even able to have plaster casts made of our fingers!
3D Shapes
In Year 6 we have been learning about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and practising using the correct vocabulary to describe them. We have identified parallel and perpendicular sides as well as built our own 3D shapes to help us understand the difference between vertices and edges. We really enjoyed being able to build our own shapes!
The Smoothie Bike
The Sunderland Lifestyle, Activity and Fitness team (LAF team) joined us during our Be Fit, Be Safe, Be Healthy week and taught us about the importance of staying active and the right choices to make for a balanced diet. We learned about the food groups and all had a turn on the Smoothie Bike where we pedaled to blend the smoothie. Afterwards we all tasted the smoothie and had to guess what fruits were in it.
A healthy dose of maths!
As part of our Be Fit, Be Safe, Be Healthy week, we put our maths skills to the test with some healthy smoothie recipes. Given the challenge to create enough smoothies for different sized groups, we had to practise scaling the different recipes up and down so there were enough smoothies for every member. Everyone worked very hard and managed to complete the challenge!
Heroic Hoop Stars!
To finish our week, we had a fab, fun, fitness session with the Hoopstarz! We all learned how to keep a hula hoop moving and some of us moved on to practising skills such as turning, jumping, hopping, kneeling up and standing up again as well as some hoop tricks. Miss Kitchen was really impressed with our skills (and envious too!). It was a great end to a fun, active and informative week. We have all learned a lot.
Friendship disco!
Year 6 had a great time at the Friendship disco during Anti-bullying week. It was great fun dancing with our friends, chatting and singing along.
Making Anderson Shelters
Since our topic has been World War 2, Miss Kitchen set us the task of designing and making a World War 2 garden complete with Anderson Shelter. We designed our shelter, collected the materials we needed and got to work. The finished products were brilliant!
Investigating Electricity
As part of our Science unit, 'Electricity' we have been looking at how circuits work, testing for faults, learning the symbols used to draw circuits and investigating conductors and insulators. We created our own circuits and picked every day household objects to test to see if they would conduct electricity.
Year 6 Evacuees
On Thursday 13th October, Year 6 came to school looking a little different from usual; they were World War 2 evacuees. This really helped us get into role for our trip to Eden Camp. Many thanks to all parents/carers for helping the children with their costumes -all staff were astounded at how brilliant they looked.
Lifeguard Training
The lifeguards joined us to teach us all about staying safe near water. We got to try on some of the kit lifeguards wear so they are safe and easily identifiable as well as learning the flags that are used on beaches. If we go to a beach, we should be able to recognise the flags and what they mean. Finally we learned about currents and how dangerous they are. We had some important safety guidelines to pass on to our families
Glo Fit!
After our army-style boot camp, it was time to let our hair down and party. We all really enjoyed our Glo Fit fitness session. It was great to see everyone enjoying keeping fit in a fun way - an aerobics session with glow sticks. Even Mrs Watkins and Mrs Reynolds had a go and showed off their moves. We all developed our coordination and rhythm and had a boogie at the same time.
Healthy Eating
After researching and creating a report on a balanced diet, Year 6 went on to work with a demonstration chef to investigate food hygiene and preparation. As we found out, all of the Be Safe, Be Fit and be Healthy headings fit into food and the way that it is prepared. We had a great time making and tasting a range of healthy options such as fruit smoothies, popcorn, sweet potato chips and spinach and ricotta.
World War 2 Class Assembly
Year 6 were fantastic in their World War 2 Class Assembly. They performed songs, drama and dances with so much enthusiasm and confidence. The children have enjoyed this topic so much and have learned so much. The dance at the end was a super end to their topic and learning. Well done Year 6!
Christmas Party Time!
Our Christmas Party this year was so much fun. The children all looked fabulous in their festive party clothes. We had a great time dancing, playing games and eating party food. Some children even showed off their talents. Merry Christmas everyone!
