Year 4 Summer Term 2018-19
Switched On
In our science lessons we have been learning about the purpose of a switch. We found them all around our classroom and even identified some we would find at home. The was the fun part. We began by creating a simple circuit with a cell, wires and a bulb. The we had the job of creating a switch using just car and split pins. We were so happy when we created our own switch and our bulb turned on and off!
French Weather Report
In our French lessons we have been learning to say how the weather. We had fun creating our own weather report and presenting it to our friends. We are hoping for lots of sunny spells.
Wider World of Work Week
Let's Talk Business
To begin our wider world or work we spoke to Mr Coulson-Patel about the risks of setting up a business. He spoke about how we could create a business plan, what we would need to consider and what we would need to provide for the bank to give us a loan. It gave us food for thought and we are eager to put our business plan together for Mrs Reynolds.
Keep it Safe!
Today we spoke to Miss Clark about her previous job role at Sainsburys. She spoke to use about how she dealt with customers, making sure all food was prepared carefully to ensure cross contamination did not occur and making sure she had enough stock on her counters. Miss Clark had a lot of responsibility!
Gibside Residential
Year 4 has a fantastic time on their residential to Gibside National Park. We took part in a variety of activities including den building, fire making, orienteering and animal tracking. We enjoyed working together and building their team work skills to make their own den to shelter them from the weather and starting a fire to keep them warm. We also made sure that our dens had some homely features including seats and a fire. The children developed their map reading skills to help them find their way around Gibside. For their night time activity, the children learnt how to read animal track and looking for signs of different animals in the area. We set up the motion camera and left it for the night. When we looked at the footage the next day we were all amazed to see we had attracted badgers, mice and deer to our traps. We were also very lucky to see two deer in the grounds when out walking. We took part in a low ropes course where we all supported each other to get around. We were fab at team work. After a action packed two days it was nice to end our trip with a nice cooling ice cream in the shade. Both children and staff had a brilliant experience at Gibside.
Orienteering
We have been learning about map reading and how to orienteer. We used the map of the school to look for certain check points. At these points, we found questions that we had to research the answer for. The questions were all about the Netherlands in Europe. We enjoyed orienteering and researching. Did you know 80% of people, in the Netherlands, cycle because of the flat land?
Product Research
After thinking about what products we want to sell in our cafe, we decided to do look at the role of product developer. We learnt that 90% of products that are developed wont reach the shelves. We decided to develop four products, infused water, scones, sandwich and cake. Keep your eyes pealed for Funky Food Cafe's foods to be hitting the shelves.
Human and Physical Geography
In geography we have been learning about physical and human geography. We then went out and identified some we could see around our school. We have went on to compare Blackfell's geography to a town in German.
What time is it?
In our maths lessons we have been learning all about time,. As part of our maths lesson we became the human clock. In our groups we had to create the 12 hour clock and add the minutes. Miss MaCleod would say a time and then as a group we had to create that time using our bodies. We had great fun telling time.
Area Manager of Aldi
This is Sam, he is the area manager of three Aldi stores in the North East. He came in to speak about his suppliers and what to order when. We asked him questions about his roles and responsibilities for his job. He spoke to us about customer service and how he deals with customer who are unhappy. He also has to look after the staff in all of his stores. We enjoyed talking to Sam and would like to thank him for his time with us.
