As we started our new unit based on ‘The Firework-Maker’s Daughter’ by Philip Pullman, we looked at the clues the front cover gave us about the story. We could learn about the setting of the book and make predictions about the main character. Alongside the first sentence from the book, we could also recognise that the story would be set in an imaginary place and it is likely to be a quest story in which the main character will go on a journey. Because we had read this book during Spring Term, we summarised the key events and pieced them together as a class to create a story map.
